The most expensive implant is the one you have to do twice.

Implants are not a one-day purchase. They live in your mouth for decades, and they need a dentist who planned them, knows them, and is nearby when something needs care. Here is what to weigh before choosing on price alone.

1Implants need care for years — close to home.

About 1 in 5 implant patients develop gum infection around an implant at some point [1]. Full-arch bridges need routine upkeep: in a published five-year study, about 1 in 8 had a porcelain fracture and 1 in 20 had a loose screw [2].

These are fixable — when your implant dentist is 10 minutes away, not a border crossing.

2Who plans it, and what is placed, both matter.

A national study in Sweden found more serious implant problems with certain implant brands and when the work was not done by a specialist [3].

In lab tests, copied off-brand parts differed considerably from the original parts they are meant to match — the shape of the connection by up to 56% [4]. And an unknown brand can be hard to repair years later.

3Treatment abroad: problems come home.

The CDC says dental care is the most common form of medical tourism among US residents. It warns that infection-control standards vary outside the US, that complications such as infections and redo surgery can add to the cost, and that patients might not have the same legal recourse as at home [5].

In a 2022 British Dental Association survey, 86% of dentists had treated problems from treatment abroad, and 85% named implants as likely to need follow-up work [6].

4Do the math once.

A lower-price full arch, plus trips and time off workabout $15,000
If it fails: removing it, rebuilding bone and redoing it here$25,000–$30,000 more
Total — and often a year living with a denture$40,000+

Doing it right the first time is the lower-cost path.

Example for illustration only; every case is different.
